“The fight against COVID-19 is a ‘People’s war’; “tackling the pandemic on a ‘war footing’ and “war-time President”. These are a few in the long list of war metaphors being frequently used in the media to highlight the impact and scale of the crisis. Use of such language may influence public understanding, behaviour and response to the pandemic. The role of language in communicating risk in a public health emergency is critical and has far-ranging impact on affected populations. The fourth webinar in the COVID19: Ask The Experts series would explore the ‘Role of Language in times of a Pandemic’. The webinar broadly covered the following topics: -Talking about a pandemic without spreading fear and stigma - what should communicators know and understand? -The role of metaphors in shaping public understanding and human response. What have previous pandemics taught us in this regard? -Humanising a pandemic -Talking to different public groups about the pandemic -Key considerations for shaping the public discourse around the pandemic
The Mumbai Litfest 2020
A Hippocratic oath for the 21st century might have incorporated the importance of giving patients a decent amount of consulting time, of carefully guiding them through the maze of bewildering technological and surgical options, of treating them as persons than just a conglomerate of individual body parts requiring specialised treatment, of a holistic approach to medicine. We see in many countries today doctors rushed for time, diagnostic tools overriding diagnostic skills, the fading away of the reliable family practitioner, googling patients and bridling doctors, with both chafing under the current scenario. How can the doctor-patient relationship be improved so that the duty of care is given and received in a space of sensitised conversations and trust? Supported by Godrej.
A panel discussion with Abraham Verghese, Henry Marsh and Padma Priya DVL as the chair.

What have been the challenges and how can we now learn to tell better stories?
